Chapter 12
Beneficial for Young & Old
Hello! Yesterday I mentioned that strength training is not only beneficial for young people who want to look good. Quite the contrary! Especially with increasing age strength training plays an ever more important role.
Adults who do not do any strength training lose, relative to their personal maximum, on average between 2.5 and 3.5 kg of muscle per decade of life (Forbes 1997, Evans and Rosenberg 1992).
Although endurance training has positive effects on the cardiovascular system it doesn't protect against a loss of muscle mass. Therefore you should definitely do regular strength training!
Your bones, tendons and joints will remain strong through consistent strength training and thus allow you to maintain your performance. You look younger, more agile and stay self-sufficient for longer.
Even diabetes in old age and damage caused by falls can be effectively prevented. (Eriksson J. 1998, 1999, 2000, Ryan AS 2000).
Considering all these advantages, it is never too late to start. No matter whether you start in your 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s or even later! Regular strength training keeps you fit in everyday life and offers you a lot of health benefits!
