Privacy Policy for the app Scelta and Scelta Pro

1. Introduction

Scelta and Scelta Pro are designed to help you track your weight and achieve your personal goals while prioritizing your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains which data is processed, how it is stored, and which third-party services are involved. Scelta is built to collect as little personal data as possible: there is no account with me, no advertising and no cross-app tracking.

2. Data Collection and Processing

a) Weight Data and Goals

  • Local Storage:

All weight entries, photos, notes and personal goals that you enter in Scelta are stored locally on your device and are used solely to display your progress within the app. The legal basis is Article 6(1)(b) GDPR, because this is precisely the function you installed the app for.

  • Camera and photo library:

If you want to attach a progress photo to an entry, Scelta asks for access to your camera or photo library. Access happens only at that moment and only for the image you choose. The photo is stored exclusively inside the app on your device and is not transmitted. The app remains fully usable without this permission.

  • App lock (Face ID / Touch ID):

You can optionally protect Scelta with your device's biometric lock. The check is performed entirely by your operating system; Scelta only receives whether unlocking succeeded and never any biometric data.

  • Export and sharing:

You can export your entries as a CSV file or share statistics as an image. Such files are created only when you trigger this yourself, and they go only to the destination you pick in the share dialog. What happens to the file afterwards is governed by the terms of the service you chose there.

b) Virtual Points, Coins, and Achievements

  • Earning Rewards:

By adhering to your personal weight goals (whether you aim to lose, gain, or maintain your weight), you can earn abstract “SP” points, coins, and achievements.

  • Game Center / Google Play Games Integration:

If you use Apple Game Center (iOS) or Google Play Games (Android), the points, coins and levels you reached in Scelta are linked to your account there. On iOS, achievements are submitted as well; the Android version submits leaderboard values only and no achievements.

Please note: leaderboards at Apple and Google are public by design. Other players can see your Game Center or Play Games nickname and the values you reached. Using this is voluntary and requires you to sign in to the respective service.

  • Privacy of Personal Data:

Only the virtual rewards are transmitted — never your weight entries, measurements or goal values. Point totals allow a general conclusion about how consistently someone uses the app and meets goals, but not about the weight or the goal behind it.

The legal basis is Article 6(1)(f) GDPR; the legitimate interest lies in the playful motivation you chose yourself by signing in to the service. Processing inside Game Center and Play Games is the responsibility of Apple and Google.

3. Data Storage and Synchronization

  • Local Data:

Your weight entries, photos, notes and goals are stored in a database on your device. Scelta does not transmit them to me and not to any server operated by me; I have no access to them. There is no user account with me.

  • Device backups by the operating system:

Independently of Scelta, your device backups may include app data. On iOS this concerns your device's iCloud backup. On Android, the system-level Android Backup saves part of the app settings to your Google account, including your height for the BMI calculation, your SP points, coins and levels, your unlock status and your answers from the setup flow. Your weight entries, photos and notes are excluded from this backup. These backups reside in your Apple or Google account, not with me; you control them in your device settings.

  • Storage at third parties:

When you use Apple Game Center or Google Play Games, the corresponding virtual data is managed within your account there. Your weight entries, photos, notes and goal values are not transmitted to these services.

4. Health App Integrations

a) Apple Health (iOS)

  • Optional Integration:

Scelta can connect to the Apple Health app if you allow it in the iOS permission dialog. The connection is voluntary and Scelta remains fully usable without it.

  • What Scelta reads: body weight, body fat percentage, waist circumference, lean body mass and height. Height is used solely to calculate BMI and waist-to-height ratio inside the app.
  • What Scelta writes: the values you record in Scelta, that is body weight and — where you entered them — body fat percentage, waist circumference and lean body mass, plus the BMI calculated from them.

All processing takes place locally on your device. Scelta does not upload this health data to any server, does not share it with third parties, and never uses it for advertising or profiling.

  • Withdrawal and Deletion:

You can revoke access at any time in your iOS settings or in the Apple Health app. Scelta can only delete Health entries that it created itself; entries from other apps must be removed in the app that created them or directly in Apple Health.

Scelta's widgets and the Apple Watch app also read these Health values for their display. They too process them on the device only. On Apple Watch you can hide the values in the settings.

b) Health Connect (Android)

  • Optional Integration:

On Android, Scelta can optionally connect to Health Connect (by Android). The connection is switched off by default, requires your explicit consent, and Scelta remains fully usable without it.

  • Data Scelta Reads:

Once access is granted, Scelta reads weight, body fat percentage, lean body mass, and height from Health Connect. Height is used solely to calculate your BMI within the app and is never written back.

  • Data Scelta Writes:

Scelta writes the weight entries you record in the app — along with body fat and lean body mass where you have entered them — to Health Connect, so that your other health apps can use them.

  • Background access:

If you have granted it, Scelta may also read new measurements from Health Connect while the app is closed, so that readings from your scale appear without you opening the app. You can revoke this permission separately at any time in your Health Connect settings.

  • Purpose and Processing:

The purpose of this connection is to let measurements from your scale and other apps appear in Scelta without manual typing, and to keep your Scelta entries available to your other health apps. All processing takes place locally on your device. Scelta does not upload this health data to any server, does not share it with third parties, and never uses it for advertising or profiling.

  • Legal Basis:

The following applies to Apple Health and Health Connect alike. Health data belongs to the special categories of personal data (Article 9(1) GDPR). Processing takes place exclusively on your device; I do not receive this data, have no access to it and do not store it. The connection is off by default and only becomes active after you have explicitly granted it in your operating system's permission dialog. To the extent that this permission constitutes consent within the meaning of Article 9(2)(a) GDPR, the processing is based on that consent; you can withdraw it at any time in your device settings or in Scelta. The app remains fully usable without the connection.

Storing your entries inside the app does not require consent under Section 25(1) of the German TDDDG, because it is strictly necessary to provide the function you requested — keeping your weight history (Section 25(2) no. 2 TDDDG).

  • Withdrawal and Deletion:

You can withdraw access at any time in your device's Health Connect settings, or by turning the connection off in Scelta under Profile → Measurement & Health → Health Connect. Scelta can only delete Health Connect records that it created itself; entries originating from other apps must be removed in the app that created them.

5. Third-Party Services

a) Purchase processing (RevenueCat)

Payment itself is handled exclusively by Apple or Google. I never receive your payment details or your name.

To verify purchases technically, manage subscriptions and restore purchases after a device change, I use RevenueCat, Inc. (USA) as a processor. The following data is processed:

  • a randomly generated, anonymous user identifier (no name, no email address),
  • your purchase history in this app (product, time, price region),
  • technical details such as device type, operating system version and language setting.

On iOS, an attribution token from Apple AdServices is additionally processed so that I can tell whether an installation came through Apple Search Ads. This serves only to measure the success of my own advertising in the App Store, not cross-app tracking; no App Tracking Transparency prompt is shown because Scelta does not track you across other apps or websites.

The legal basis is Article 6(1)(b) GDPR (performing the contract for the unlocked features) and Article 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in fraud prevention, working purchase restoration and measuring my own advertising). Transfer to the USA is based on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses and, where the provider is certified, the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. b) Anonymous usage statistics (TelemetryDeck)

To understand which features are used and where Scelta needs to improve, I collect usage statistics through TelemetryDeck, operated by TelemetryDeck GmbH, Augsburg, Germany. This applies to iOS and Android alike.

The following is transmitted in particular:

  • which features were opened (for example photos, notes, BMI, body composition, health synchronization) and whether a health connection is active,
  • your answers from the setup flow, such as the chosen goal direction (lose, gain, maintain), the weekly pace and the motivation style you picked,
  • whether the purchase screen was shown and whether a purchase was completed, plus your subscription state,
  • basic technical data: app and operating system version, device model, language and region, screen dimensions, time zone,
  • accessibility settings such as font size, bold text, colour inversion or “reduce motion”, so that I can improve the presentation for them,
  • usage history in the form of session count, session length and number of days used.

Your measurements themselves are not transmitted. Weight, height, BMI, body fat percentage, waist circumference, goal values, notes and photos are technically excluded from transmission; the app actively refuses to send such values. What is transmitted is only that a feature was used, never which value resulted from it.

TelemetryDeck is built for privacy-friendly statistics: the device identifier is obscured on your device with a non-reversible hash, no advertising ID is used, and no IP addresses are stored. Evaluation happens exclusively in aggregate (“how many”, never “who”). The legal basis is Article 6(1)(f) GDPR; my legitimate interest lies in improving the app. More information: TelemetryDeck Privacy Policy.

c) Analytics and diagnostics (Android only)

The Android version of Scelta additionally uses two Firebase services from Google. For users in the European Economic Area the provider is Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland; processing by Google LLC in the USA may take place.

  • Google Analytics for Firebase records how the app is used. It processes an installation identifier generated by Google together with timestamps, plus technical details such as device model, operating system version, language and country. Google retains the data linked to that identifier for 60 days; aggregated reporting data is kept beyond that.
  • Firebase Crashlytics records error and crash reports in order to find stability problems. It processes device type, operating system version, the time of the error, country and language.

Your device's advertising ID is not used; the corresponding permission is explicitly removed in the app. Your weight data, photos, notes and health values are not transmitted to Firebase.

The legal basis is Article 6(1)(f) GDPR; the legitimate interest lies in detecting errors and improving the app. You can object to this processing under Article 21 GDPR; a message to joe@waldow.app is enough. The iOS version of Scelta does not use these services.

d) What I do not use

Scelta contains no advertising SDKs and shows no advertising. There is no tracking across other apps or websites, no advertising ID is used, and no data is passed to advertising networks or data brokers.

6. Data Deletion and User Control

  • Local Data Control:

You can delete individual entries at any time inside the app. Removing the app deletes all locally stored weight entries, photos, notes, goals and rewards from your device.

  • Third-Party Data:

Data stored via third-party services (such as Apple Health, Health Connect, Game Center, or Google Play Games) is managed and deleted through those services. I have no direct control over data maintained by these external providers. If you wish to delete or access data stored by these services, please use their respective settings or contact the provider directly.

7. Retention periods

Your weight entries, photos, notes, goals and rewards stay on your device until you delete them in the app or remove the app. There is no retention period for them, because the data is yours and I do not hold it.

The anonymous purchase identifier at RevenueCat is stored for as long as it is required to provide and restore your unlock. The usage statistics at TelemetryDeck exist only in aggregate form and cannot be attributed to a person.

8. Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right of access (Art. 15), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18), data portability (Art. 20) and objection to processing based on a legitimate interest (Art. 21). Where processing is based on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time with effect for the future.

A message to joe@waldow.app is enough to exercise these rights.

Please note the particular nature of this app: your weight and health data resides exclusively on your device. I have no access to it, cannot view it, cannot hand it over and cannot delete it. Access, portability and erasure of that data are therefore available to you directly in the app and through your device settings. For data held by Apple, Google, Apple Health, Health Connect, Game Center or Google Play Games, please contact the respective provider. Where I process purchase or statistics data only under an anonymous identifier, I may be unable to link you to individual records; in that case I will support you as far as possible (Art. 11 GDPR).

No automated decision-making including profiling within the meaning of Art. 22 GDPR takes place.

9. Right to lodge a complaint

You have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority, in particular in the country of your residence, your place of work or the place of the suspected infringement. For me as the controller, based in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, the competent authority is:

10. Changes to This Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy is updated when the app or the legal situation changes. The version published on this page at any given time governs.
