Chapter 29
Feel the Muscle – Don’t Just Move
Hey! Today’s key question: do you really feel the target muscle, or are you just moving weight from A to B?
When you consciously activate the working muscle (mind-muscle connection), you place the training stimulus where it counts. That makes your training more effective.
Start every rep stable: Find a solid starting position, brace your core and target muscle slightly, and keep joints in a safe, neutral position.
Perform the lifting phase actively and with control. Think about the target muscle: push with your chest on bench press, pull with your back on rows, lift with your shoulders on lateral raises.
Avoid momentum. If the movement is only from swinging, the target muscle works less. Lower the weight if you can’t do a clean rep without swinging.
Use a full, suitable range of motion. Go as far as you can while keeping tension and good technique – no pain, no cheating.
Add short pauses at the stretch or end position to eliminate momentum and feel the tension. A brief pause sharpens your awareness of the working muscle.
Breathe rhythmically: exhale during effort, inhale during return. Calm breathing helps you keep tempo and control.
Choose a weight that brings you close to failure in your target rep range, so the muscle burns – with clean technique to the last rep.
In compound exercises, you’ll feel several muscles. Focus on the main driver of the movement and adjust grip, stance or bench position as needed.
Isolation exercises are perfect for improving the feeling for a muscle. Use them at the end of your session to focus and add volume.
Summary: Quality over ego. Feel the target muscle, control the movement and keep tension – then every rep counts!
